For the past year and a half, I’ve been steadily growing my caffeine tolerance.
There’s no “growth department” or magic wads of investor cash (yet). Just two founders, a healthy dose of stubbornness, and an AI-powered toolkit that somehow gets more creative every week.
We’ve been generating revenue since we put up shop, and growing steadily MoM, but every day is still a masterclass in doing more with less. Team meetings? Most of the time, it’s a high-speed negotiation with an AI agent who’s convinced emojis are a universal language.
AI was supposed to turn us into productivity powerhouses.
Instead, we’ve learned it’s not about stacking more tools, more dashboards, and more headaches. It’s about building smarter and making every pound (and minute) stretch.
So if you’re building lean, scaling fast, or simply desperate to escape your own inbox, welcome to the playbook I wish someone had handed me on day one.
Get scrappy.
Forget “one-and-done.” Building a bootstrapped business with AI is less about landing one genius idea, more about treating experimentation as your favourite team sport.
Every week, we’re testing. Some experiments flop spectacularly and others automate hours of busywork or unlock a new revenue trick.
The real win? Making this habitual.
This means building and refining agents becomes second nature, not just a desperate dash when you’re drowning.
The “fail fast” cliché? Turns out, it’s painfully true.
The difference is, with AI, you can run more experiments, cheaper, and actually enjoy the learning curve (mostly).
Let’s get zesty.
Here’s the zesty secret:
Most wins don’t come from a genius idea or an “aha!” shower moment. They come from mucking about.
For bootstrapped founders, experimentation means survival. Without a bottomless budget, you learn to love quick tests, fast flops, and the occasional script that automates your confusion instead of your workload.
Instead of chasing perfect, we treat every week like a mini hackathon. Sometimes we land something brilliant like a scrappy agent that does our prospecting, so we don’t have to. Other times, we just learn what not to do.
But that’s the real win: building a rhythm where small, scrappy experiments become second nature.
Momentum is a habit, and so is getting back up.
The Juice
Right, enough pep talk. Here’s how we actually use AI to run a lean, mean, “wait, how are they doing that?” business, without burning cash or sanity.
1. Build an AI Team on Pocket Change
Forget the enterprise tools with price tags that sting. (Check out my Pocket Guide in the next section)
2. Automate the Boring, Brag About the Results
Ask yourself: what’s one task you dread? For us, it was triaging the support inbox.
Quick win:
Build a simple email responder with a calendly link
Set up an agent for FAQs, bonus points if you let the agent use emojis
Use AI to turn meeting notes into to-do lists before you forget what you agreed to do
3. Fake a Content Team. With Just You (and a Bot)
You don’t need to write LinkedIn posts, newsletters, and customer emails from scratch.
Feed your top three FAQs to an AI, let it spin out a month’s worth of social posts
Batch-generate blog ideas, email drafts, and even responses to “can we have a call?”
Proofread, tweak, and add your voice at the end (your audience will never know you did it all in pyjamas)
4. Know When to Not Use AI
We’ve wasted hours “AI-ifying” stuff that would’ve taken two minutes the old-fashioned way.
If it takes longer to automate than just do it, move on.
AI is a multiplier, not a miracle.
The Pocket Guide (Steal This Stack)
Copy, paste, customise, and go. Here’s our current “shoestring” AI stack (disclaimer - we are biased).
Here’s the thing about bootstrapping with AI: You won’t get it right every time. Some days, your agents will run wild and automate the wrong thing.
But when you treat building with AI like a series of small, messy experiments, you stop waiting for perfect and start building momentum, one scrappy win at a time.
So don’t just read this and go back to “business as usual.”
Pick one annoying task, grab tool, and build your laziest, quickest agent yet.
Send yourself a congratulatory email. Or better yet, have your agent do it for you.
Building lean is the superpower.
Getting zesty is the fun part.
